Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Dean of Arts and Science,

I am appealing so that I may swap courses from Econ 110 A & B to Econ 111, which is the same course except for the fact that 111 only lasts for Fall Semester instead of the full year. Initially I enrolled in Econ 110 A & B because I was under the impression from University of Ottawa's international law requirements that I was required to take introductory Micro and Macro Economics. I thought that I would be able to manage the course until we received our first assignment. I am having serious problems with the assignment and with all the math content in the class. I have not done any math other than adding in four years and my skills are very weak. I have slowly been struggling through the first assignment with hours of help from the economics teaching assistants which led me to return to University of Ottawa's requirement website and double check the need for economics. When reading their requirements again it was made clear that only economic majors need introductory classes to Micro and Macro and that students not studying economics are only required to take 1 credit (1 Semester) worth of introductory economics. Due the struggles and continued struggle I am having with this first assignment I am terrified that I will fail this course and my overall GPA will drop if I have to take this course for a full year. I am a History and German language medial and economics is an elective I am taking purely for my law school application. While I would like to continue it for my law school applications I cannot risk my overall GPA dropping by taking the full year course when I can barely manage to cope with completing the first assignment of the year. I am an international student on a scholarship from my home government and without the scholarship would not be able to attend university and therefore can not risk my overall GPA dropping. I appeal to you to grant permission for me to swap the courses so I may get the credits needed for my law school applications without suffering the consequences of my GPA dropping and losing my scholarship.

Thank you for your consideration.

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: If my appeal is granted I will spend as much extra time as necessary studying my economics chapters and receiving help from the economics teaching assistance to ensure that my GPA does not drop and that I do well in the class.
This includes:

- going to TA hours Monday through Thursday
-reviewing my notes and the slides after every class
-taking notes on my readings as well as in my lectures
-doing practice question from the text book and practice quizzes online

If my appeal is granted so that I only take economics for this single semester I will also make appointments with the professor to ensure that I understand what is being taught and to review my progress or difficulties every few weeks. I will also speak to the professor about what I can do to learn and understand better and overall improve my grade in economics.

Essentially, if my appeal is granted I will do whatever it takes to do well in the single semester course and maintain or improve my GPA and keep my scholarship.
