Petition Letter: Dear Dean Bénard,
I am writing to explain the extenuating circumstance that has led to my inability to complete POLS 261 and 211 this fall. Taking this situation into account, I am requesting Aegrotat credit for these courses.
I have suffered from chronic Lyme Disease for much of my life but in recent years, thanks to a proper diagnosis and treatment, my health has been good enough to attend school normally. Lyme Disease shares some symptoms with illnesses such as Mononucleosis and Fibromyalgia, the most pronounced symptoms being severe, lasting fatigue and cognitive impairment or ¿¿brain fog.¿ Last semester, my illness flared up again, greatly exacerbating these symptoms. I am including my Queen¿¿s Student Accessibility Services documentation form from this fall, completed by Dr. John F. Coombs, which outlines the impact of my illness on school performance, including ¿¿episodic periods of more debilitating illness.¿ Due to this deterioration in my condition, it was impossible for me to write my final exams this fall.
My professors were extremely kind and accommodating and I had hoped to complete these
requirements during this semester. However, despite undergoing aggressive treatment, I have seen little improvement in my condition. I am taking only the second half of the full-year POLS 210 this semester as the bare minimum to remain in school and even this small commitment has proved to be overwhelming. As such, I am requesting Aegrotat credit for the two outstanding fall term courses, POLS 261 and 211.
A review of my transcript from last year, where I was proud to have achieved
standing on the ¿¿Dean¿¿s Honour List - with Distinction,¿ would support the fact that this difficulty is uncharacteristic of my academic abilities. I regret my current illness has not made my usual level of academic effort and standing sustainable at present but remain optimistic I will eventually improve and be well enough to return to a full time
program.
