Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Dear Ms. Atkinson,
Associate Dean of Arts and Science (studies)
I am appealing to drop DEVS 100, ENIN 140, GNDS 125, HIST 122 and POLS 110. Also to receive a CR for my RELS 162 credit.
I want to do this due to the psychological challenge I have faced since coming to Queen's, that has affected me academically. Over the past few years I have suffered from anxiety and depression, however since coming to Queen's in September my mood and overall levels of anxiety have become more of a challenge for me to deal with. Especially since the beginning of the second semester my anxiety has inhibited my attendance in tutorials, which has affected my marks greatly. My overall mood has stopped me from participating actively in the Queen's community and being social in general which has lead to extreme loneliness, impacting my depression significantly. Throughout my time at Queen's I have had regular appointments with a private therapist and have been taking various medications to try to improve my mental health. However these medications have produced a negative impact towards my studies, making me nauseous and greatly fatigued all the time. This has made it extremely hard to perform academically. I have attached a recommendation letter from my therapist stating her support of my decision to withdraw from the school.
Should my appeal be granted I am going to take a year off and spend time focusing on what I want to do for my future academically. I do not plan on coming back to Queen's but I hope to continue my academic career elsewhere. I want to be able to manage my mood and anxiety better so I can put my best foot forward when it comes to my education. I believe I can best achieve this when surrounded by my support system which is mainly in Toronto. Thank you for your time and reading my letter of appeal.
Sincerely,
Jessica Hatton
