RE: Academic Appeal to Drop Courses after Deadline and Return to Studies Appeal

Dear Dr. Atkinson

I am writing you this letter to appeal to drop courses after the deadline and to return to my studies at Queen's University to complete my degree.

In September 2005 I was enrolled in full time studies in the BAH Political Studies program with the goal of graduating in April 2006. Unfortunately by the beginning October 2005 I got news that my mother who was living in Ethiopia was ill. I was assured by family members not to worry and to continue with my studies. By the end of October 2005, things did not look good and I made the decision to abandon my studies and fly to Ethiopia to be with her as I did not fully trust family members giving me an honest picture of her state of health. I was lucky and fortunate to get there in time as on November 13, 2005 my mother passed away. This even left me devastated and rootless as she was the one who has always encouraged me to finish my studies.

After the funeral, it felt really hard to leave the country even at the encouragement of my other family members. I was not ready to leave her and I ended up living and working in Ethiopia until late 2009. By that time I got married and and moved back to Canada but the fact that I never finished my university degree always loomed in the back of my mind. This is something that I feel I must do for myself, my mother and my new daughter. I want to show my daughter that its never too late to finish something left undone.

Thank you in advance for your consideration in my appeal.

Regards,

Waldo Ali
