Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,
My name is Kailey Fisher (20022753) and I am currently a second year student, who is still undeclared and on academic probation. I am submitting this academic appeal to you, asking to waive the 21-day or one term deadline. I would like the deadline waived because at the time when I should have submitted the appeal, I did not know that it was an option for me. I did not realize that I could submit an appeal based upon the extenuating circumstances I was going through last year, and it was not made clear to me that I could until I met with an academic advisor this term. The transition to first year was very difficult and stressful. I had always been an honours student in high school and this was the first time I was not able to succeed academically. Throughout the year, I worked with a tutor, and worked with a mentor (a senior Queens student) to try to address the academic challenges I was facing but I was unable to overcome them. When I realized that I had missed the academic deadline for dropping the courses, I became overwhelmed by stress, however, I did persevere with writing the exams, but was unsuccessful. At this time, I contemplated seeking medical attention, however, after a discussion with my family and peers I decided that I would try my hardest without medical help. If attestation is required from my family and peers, I can provide them.
After almost completing this year, I am in a much better place and those extenuating circumstances no longer have the same affect on me, which is now why I would like the deadline waived. I now know that my work last year was not a true reflection of myself as a student and I would like the chance to fix that.
If this appeal is approved, I plan to submit another appeal. On this second appeal, I am going to be asking to have MATH 110 (Fall 2016, Winter 2017) and MATH 120 (Fall 2016, Winter 2017) removed from my transcript. The second appeal, assuming the first is granted, will allow me to declare a major, better my academic standing, set me up for future success at Queen¿¿s.
Thank you for your consideration,
Kailey Fisher
