Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: I am requesting to be transferred to the second year French class (FREN 221), as I believe I would be able to succeed and fully complete this course. Due to many factors I think placing myself in FREN 221 would be the ideal decision because the first year course in French is not adequate enough for my current of French. Based on the fact that I had my full education in Quebec I will be able to follow the syllabus like the other students. However I believe that because of my French education I will also have an advantage over other students and it will allow me to keep up as well as catch up on the material I have missed. My situation is slightly confusing where I decided to add French class during this summer as part of my Economic majoring program. But I was not able to add the correct course based on my knowledge concerning the French language and French literature. After the first week I realised that I had to swap or drop this particular class to be able to move up to a harder class where I would be able to have a challenge and to learn. Then I went to see Mme Dufresne, which is the Undergraduate Chair of the French Department, and we decided that it would be the best decision to place me in a higher-level French class to therefore allow me to grow and to discover new aspects of the French language. After my discussion with Mme Dufresne I wrote to Mme Bénard, the Associate Dean of the Arts and Science program, to further advance my request for placement in the second year French class. At this point I began to understand my implication and my personal obligation concerning my request. She then explained to me what I had to do and how to appeal for a class, as it was already too late to add, swap or drop a class without appealing for another course. Following my multiple emails and conversation with both Mme Bénard and Mme Dufresne I started to understand the process that would allow me to gain the credits for first year French class, allowing me to go in second year class. At this point, I had to contact Mme Everson that explained to me the regular procedure to appeal for a class at Queen¿¿s university. At first it seemed like a confusing process but following the tasks and the obligation made it simple. Now that I have the agreement of both the Undergraduate Chair of the French Department, Mme Dufresne and the second year French teacher (FREN 221), Mme Elodie Vignon, I believe I have everything needed to attend her class as a first year student.
