Petition Letter: Hello,
My name is Navita Sehgal and I am currently enrolled as a third year French major. I am writing this letter of appeal in order to drop a course, FREN390, after the academic deadline. I personally feel there are many reasons for wishing to drop this course. My third year of university has been a very difficult year in relation to my mental health along with balancing extra curricular activities and my academics. Throughout the winter semester, I frequently asked for extensions on all my courses due to my mental health, including FREN390. In terms of my health, I have been more anxious, feeling depressive thoughts and very unmotivated to complete any assignments. I, unfortunately, did not seek counsel or help for my health as I always felt it went it waves. The moments that I felt extremely low were when things were busy and I felt like once I was ready to speak to someone about it, it was first talking to people close to me and it felt like it made it better, temporarily. I tried to distract myself with other things rather than acknowledge my mental health. I have also recently begun to think that studying as a French major is not something I wish to continue. I started searching into having a general bachelors of Arts degree (Honours) to complete courses that may interest me, and taking prerequisite courses for multiple different things, as I currently am unsure of what I wish to pursue in the future and feel as though French is not helping me to figure that out. I do acknowledge that may students do not fully know what they wish to complete, and I am no exception. However, with many low grades in French and another one to follow I realize this is not a major I enjoy and are not courses I wish to continue. I do wish to continue with my studies at Queen's however not as a French major. With dropping this course, I will be able keep my GPA and hopefully work towards a higher one with courses I enjoy and wish continue in the future. I hope to work towards a degree I enjoy. I truly think that dropping this course, and studying different courses will better my mental health and my GPA. I hope you take this letter of appeal into consideration, I look forward to hearing back from you soon.
Best,
Navita Sehgal
