Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Johanne Bénard,
I am appealing to receive Aegrotat Standing for the course PHIL 347, Contemporary Philosophy, from the 2017 Fall term. Despite receiving treatment for my depressive disorder, I was only able to complete 60 of the course work for PHIL 347.
As you see in my file, I experienced a relapses in major depressive disorder in November 2017 that severely disabled my functioning, and posed significant risk to my mental well being. I made the decision to leave school at the end of the fall semester and concentrate on recovery with the support of my family. When I left, I had almost completed PHIL 347, with only the final paper left. Professor Rahul Kumar granted me an incomplete in the course, and I was confident that I would be able to complete the final assignment since I would be in a healthier and more supportive environment at the time of writing.
After the fall term, I following through with my decision and I took a leave from Queen¿¿s. I have been able to improve my mental health, and I am recovering. However, I have not been able to regain my academic functioning, and as a result, I was unable to complete this final assignment, despite my best efforts.
My current priority is full recovery. Once that is achieved, I have every intention of continuing on with my studies. I cannot state enough my passion and love for my studies. I will continue to fight my depression so that I may one day return and continue with my studies. I am simply unable to succeed in this task at the moment. However, this time away is proving invaluable and I know that with time I will recover from depression.
I have spoken to Professor Rahul Kumar about my current situation, and he has agreed to support me in this request for Aegrotat Standing. I hope that you will consider it as well.
Sincerely,
Sydney Dummett
