Petition Letter: To Whom This May Concern,
My name is Nikhil Dilawri and I just completed my second year as an Applied Economics student at Queen's University. I have thoroughly enjoyed both my time at the university and my field of study. From the department head to the TA's, the entire faculty has been extremely accommodating, well-structured and most importantly well-taught. I am writing an appeal letter to the Associate Dean to request to study abroad in the Winter 2019 semester on an International Letter of Permission.
This past semester, I applied to participate in the Arts and Science Bilateral Exchange Program. Unfortunately, I was placed on the wait list for the schools that I applied to. Receiving that email was very disappointing, as the opportunity to go on exchange is one that I am very fond of. However, once learning about the International Letter of Permission, my hope was restored by the possibility of going on exchange. This once in a lifetime opportunity is one that I simply cannot not pass up.
Throughout my life, I have had the opportunity to travel abroad and immerse myself in many different cultures. My most notable travelling experiences have been family trips to France, India and Scotland. To have had the opportunity to learn about their very different languages, cuisines and lifestyles was an amazing experience. These past experiences are fueling my desire to study abroad and learn all about another country. Another reason why exchange is something that greatly interests me is because of my past experience studying abroad. In the summer of 2015, I took a high school credit in Spain, a trip that spanned over three weeks in multiple cities. The ability to study abroad while seeing all that Spain had to offer was a combination that I greatly enjoyed. Connecting this experience to going on an exchange, the fact that I would be able to study over several months and potentially visit many other foreign countries is something that appeals to me very much.
After completing hours of research, both online and through various phone calls, I plan on applying to the Jean Moulin Lyon 3 University in France. I am thoroughly interested in the economics courses they have to offer, specifically their European Economics course. This would allow me to study a topic that I could not study here at Queens. Another course that interests me is their Financial Analysis (IFRS) and Risk Management Course. This course appears to be very similar to ECON 322 at Queen's, however the ability to learn it from a different perspective would be a very unique experience. From a cultural aspect, the week I spent in Paris made me want to go back to France right from the moment I left. I felt as though there was so much to learn about the different regions in France, and being able to spend an extended period of time in Lyon would allow me to do that. Another beneficial aspect of studying in Lyon is that I am fully fluent in French. This would allow me to fully involve myself in their day to day life without a language barrier.
As for the appeal itself, there are no extenuating academic circumstances that have led me to this point. I am in good academic standing with the university. As of May 4th 2018, my cumulative GPA is 3.51 and I have completed 57 of my required 114 credits. I am not appealing any decisions made by the department or the International Programs Office. This appeal letter is to apply for the Associate Dean's permission to study abroad on an International Letter of Permission.
