Subject: Appeal the decision to withdraw from Queen's for a year and to drop classes past the deadline
To the Associate Dean of Studies,
I am appealing the Faculty's decision that I must withdraw from Queen's University for a year. I am also appealing to drop all my first-year classes past the deadline (Fall 2017 - Winter 2018). The classes are ECON 101, MATH 111, CISC 101 and STATS 263.
About 8 months ago, I had some personal issues related to some individuals close to myself back in Montreal, forcing me to repeatedly travel back and forth between the two cities. Those events put me in a dark place, that I thought I could get out of by myself. Recently, I saw a doctor and realized, after her diagnosis, that that place was depression. When I was back in Kingston, I was completely frozen and incapable of attending classes as I was confined in my room staring at the ceiling. It made me miss countless classes and had me stuck in my bed when exams came up. Later, I started having insomnia regularly. This along with a significant loss of weight, made it impossible for me to focus on any work, whether it was related to the University, my professional life or my social one.
I then went to a program called Bounce Back as well as Academic Advising to try to get myself back on track. It helped me to attend a few classes and tests, but the motivation and the drive were not there anymore and my focus on studying was weakened. It took me months to talk about it with someone that was close to me. The reason was fear or simply because I thought I could resolve it by myself. I believed it was me being too weak in that situation and that someone else should not have to take care of it.
I now started seeing a doctor who helped me with my insomnia over the last few weeks and I am currently under treatment for depression. Regarding that last aspect, I recently started seeing a psychologist to help me get back to my former self, instead of the shadow I have been over the last 8 months.
As Academic Advising and my doctor recommended, I dropped the summer courses I had enrolled in. This will give me the time to recover, instead of digging myself into a deeper hole. I am appealing to drop the courses mentioned at the beginning of the letter to retake some of them over the fall session. This would give me a lighter course load and work schedule. This allows me to maintain monthly meetings with my doctor regarding my treatment for my insomnia and depression, as well as regular consultations with my psychologist to help me cope.
I believe this letter justifies the appeal to the decision that I must withdraw from Queen's for a year. It should also justify the delayed dropping of my classes. Those resolutions will allow me to restart taking courses and be fully able to focus on them during the Fall semester of 2018.
I am at your disposal if you believe we should meet or have any other questions on the matter.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Quentin Courtel
