Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Dean Johanne Benard,

My name is Hannah Joan Simpson (student 20005521). I am writing this letter to appeal to have courses dropped from my transcript as I did not successfully complete them. I had a very difficult year from a mental health perspective.

The stress of second year started to mount in late semester one. I thought the break at Christmas holidays would allow me to regain my momentum and get on track for semester two. I met with the Learning Strategies Centre in January to try to create a study plan.

I stopped taking my medication, which made me lose even more focus. My stress mounted and my anxiety took over. I fell into a downward spiral of binge eating and social isolation. There were many days I could not even get out of bed. Ultimately, I was unable to complete many of my courses successfully.

I have taken steps to overcome the paralyzing power of anxiety. I am meeting with a counsellor to develop strategies. I am keeping a bullet journal. I am taking an online course this summer and have created a schedule of working on it for a minimum of two hours a day. I am committed to taking my medication.

I really want to return for fall semester and view the 2018/2019 academic year as my true second year. I will start by taking only 3 courses, to prevent me from becoming overwhelmed. This past year was a true wake -up call that forced me to realize that the anxiety I had developed as a teenager was taking over my life.

I am requesting that the following courses be removed from my transcript: Drama 200, Drama 220, Drama 241, GNDS 215, CLST 103, MUTH 110, GNDS 212. I am also requesting a credit standing for Drama 240.

I really love Queen¿¿s and Kingston. The university is very important to me. I need to return to prove to myself that I can be successful. I need to return so that I can overcome my anxiety.

I am more than willing to come up to Kingston to speak with you in person if you want.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Respectfully,

Hannah Joan Simpson
