Petition Letter: Throughout my second term of university, my mental health began to decline which greatly affected my marks. This is something that I have dealt with throughout the majority of my life although I have not received formal treatment until recently. I did reach out to both counselling services in the La Salle building, academic advisors, and dropped my hardest course that I was failing (Psych 101) in order to lighten my course load and avoid my GPA being dragged down. In spite of these efforts, I continued to suffer in a way that made it extremely difficult for me to cope with how I was feeling on top of the stress of schoolwork. I was able to maintain passing marks in all courses as I neared the end of the term, except for Sociology 101. I got in contact with my TA, the TA coordinator, as well as Professor Beamish to make them aware of my situation and my intentions to do my best given my situation. They helped me out immensely and were very understanding and patient, providing me with assignment deadline extensions. However, I did not pass Sociology 101 due to the extenuating circumstances.
Academic Plan
Academic Plan: Following the end of my first year of studies, I have made the decision to withdraw from Queens and take a year off from higher education. Within this year, I am planning to work full-time to fund my future education, which includes funding my enrollment into online classes to raise my GPA (through the University of Guelph, my future institution of choice). I will also be fully committed to seeing my psychiatrist on a weekly basis to make sure that I get the help and support I need emotionally and mentally in order to succeed academically. I have made the decision to switch institutions as I feel that Queens is not the environment for me, and I did not see a future within the areas of study I had enrolled in. Therefore, I am going to apply to an area of study in which I am passionate about, as I believe passion plays a large role in achieving both success and happiness. In order to transfer into this course, I am required to have a certain GPA which I currently am below.
Through online courses, I am fully capable of recovering and raising my GPA, although I am hoping that the Sociology mark could infact be dropped given my personal circumstances during the course. If that mark is dropped, I will be able to take fewer credits in order to recover, meaning I can spread out my course load over a larger amount of time in order to better manage stress and succeed while working and recieving therapy. I believe by being able to balance out my priorities while still being productive in the year that I have off, I will be much more prepared and qualified for consideration into the academic year ahead. I do, however, understand if dropping the failed course is beyond the capabilities of the faculty.
I am currently in the process of getting a medical letter on behalf of my psychiatrist that will be available upon further treatment.
