I, Faith-Ann Mendes with the support of my medical practitioner at the Women¿¿s College Family practice, Health, Counseling Services at Queens, and the Gender Studies Department am appealing to the Associate Dean (Studies) to accept my appeal to drop DRAM 210 (fall, 2010) , DRAMA 201( fall,2011), DRAMA 202 (winter,2012), DRAMA 319 (winter 2012), GNDS 440 (winter 2013) after the 21 day deadline. Additionally I am appealing to the Associate Dean (Studies) to accept my appeal for aegrotat standing in GNDS 351 (winter, 2012), DRAMA 311 (winter, 2012) , and DRAMA 251 (fall,2010), HIST 258 (winter 2012), GNDS 428 ( fall 2012) after the 21 day deadline. I am also appealing to the Associate Dean (Studies) to accept my request for an extension on the deadline to submit incomplete work in GNDS 345 (winter, 2013). Finally, I am requesting that the Associate Dean accept my appeal to drop GEO 257.
It would be fair to inquire why I waited until to appeal now given the fact that I have sought academic and counselling services in the past. The reason for this is that my depression, sexual trauma, and post-traumatic stress are not easy to address alone without parental/familial support. Indeed, the nature my depression pushes one to feel that it is something to be ashamed, hidden, while at same time it paralyses with fear. Thankfully, I have with the regular support of my medical practitioner, therapy, and medication, I am able to not only combat my mental illness, I will be able to cultivate a healthy scholastic career at Queens.

My depression, sexual trauma, and post-traumatic stress have manifested itself in my scholastic
career at Queens. As a result, I have had great difficulty focusing consistently on readings,
on completing assignments, and on time-management. In times of high stress at Queens, I, as
a coping mechanism emotionally and mentally shut-down and am unable to communicate.
This only caused me to further isolate myself and exasperate my feelings of anxiety, fear and
shame. Indeed, it is because of my previously mentioned mental illness(es) (along with resulting
mental state), and manifestation(s) I have missed exams, failed to complete final assignments,
and have been unable to communicate with professors effectively to find possible alternatives.
For instance, in my second year at Queens I was unable to complete the final assignment in
DRAMA311, DRAMA 251, and I was unable to be mentally present in DRAM 201 as a result of
my previously coping mechanisms and manifestations of my PTSD and depression. Furthermore,
shortly before returning for my third year at Queen's, I was notified that my sexual assailant
was found not guilty of his violence against me. This severely affected and compounded my
depression, PTSD and trauma. Meaning, I had even greater difficulty managing my course load,
thus my previously mentioned coping mechanisms and manifestations of my mental illness
became habitual and a constant barrier to me succeeding academically. As a result, I was unable
to complete my final assignment in GNDS 351, DRAM 311, and exam in HIST 258, as well
as being unable to complete substantial work in DRAMA 202, and DRAM 319. Moreover, as
my chronic depression, PTSD, and sexual trauma had not been addressed, it intensified during
my fourth year of undergraduate studies. As a result, I was unable to complete course work in
GNDS 440 (winter 2013) and I was unable to complete the final assignment for GNDS 345 of
which I had gained an incomplete in the allocated time. However, I have since completed the
assignment. After returning to school after a four month break in the winter of fall 2014 I was unable to complete
GEO 257 as I was not yet mentally stable and my mental illness had not yet become manageable.

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: As I move forward, I, Faith-Ann Mendes intend to continue to pursue a major in gender studies with a minor in dramatic arts. I intend to enrol in fall 2015 taking a sixty percent course load. I intend to make sure I consider my mental health and continuing recovery as central as I pursue my academic goals . As such I will have monthly meetings with a learning strategist counsellor, in order to plan out my assignments, manage my anxiety and stress

continued bi-weekly or weekly (depending) consultations with my medical practitioner at the
