Academic appeal letter by Leah Bae

To the Associate Dean (Studies):

I am appealing the Faculty¿¿s decision that I must withdraw from Queen¿¿s University for a minimum of one year.

In June 2016 I experienced a highly traumatic event: I was sexually assaulted by a man. The trauma from this event was emotionally pervasive and affected my ability to focus, and study and participate in my courses. I also suffered from post traumatic stress triggers which prohibited me from healing more quickly. What resulted was shame and isolation which affected my ability to seek help earlier. I was also working abroad by myself in London, and I did not have the appropriate support to work through this trauma. I made the decision to move back home to Vancouver in January 2017 in order to get help and support, and be supported by my family. I did this by going to the Sexual Assault Support Centre at UBC, who has supplied documentation for my appeal.

I have made significant personal adjustments. After receiving support at the Sexual Assault Support Centre, I now regularly see a Registered Clinical Counsellor and participate in Life Coaching programs. I¿¿ve also begun to take a smaller course load (1 or 2 courses per semester). After receiving help, from Summer 2017 onwards my grades have significantly improved as a direct result in improvement of my mental and emotional health. In my latest semester, I achieved an A- and B in my courses. I am confident that I am on good track to successfully complete my university degree. Furthermore, I only have 6.0 credits left until I can graduate. The one mandatory course I have left for my Global Development Studies degree (DEVS 240) will not be offered for at least another 1.5 years if I am unable to take it in Fall 2018.

I sincerely hope you can consider my academic appeal. I appreciate for your consideration.

Thank you,
Leah

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: I have 6.0 credits left until I have satisfied my credit requirement for graduation. I plan to take one course in the summer intensive courses and a maximum of two courses in the fall, in order to graduate. I recognize that I have to bring my CGPA up to a 1.60 to graduate. All the courses I plan to take in Summer 2018 and Fall 2018 will be to retake the courses I have previously failed. This will help bring up my GPA. As well I will get the chance to properly absorb and learn from the course material, with better emotional and mental health.

In Summer 2018 I am retaking FILM 300.

In Fall 2018 I will retake DEVS 240 ¿¿ it is my last required course in my degree program prior to graduation, and it is only offered every 1.5 years. Dependant on my GPA, I will also retake EMPR220. I will reassess my mental health with my therapist and academic advisor closer to Fall, but I feel confident I will be able to handle the two courses because I have been successfully able to do so in Winter 2018 and Fall 2017.

I also plan to continue to see my therapist regularly (every 2 weeks to 1 month) and participate in life coaching programs. I will also continue to see academic advising at Queen¿¿s.
