Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Due to extenuating circumstances involving a physical impairment, I was unable to complete my Math 121 exam to the best of my abilities.
On March 12th 2018 I was pushed down to the ground and assaulted by an unknown male who sexually assaulted me and left me with my injuries and physical impairment. I experienced concussion symptoms and saw Dr. Laura Butler the next day who diagnosed me with a concussion marking all of my symptoms severe and giving my extensions on all assignments and test for the following 2 weeks. These symptoms included dizziness, loss of balance, inability to sleep and severely effected my academic performance and mental stability. I experienced depressive symptoms and saw a counsellor to attempt to improve my post-traumatic trauma. After speaking to a counsellor I realized that it is best to accept what occurred, and not allowing it to disrupt my life further. The symptoms lasted much longer than expected and I experienced vision loss in 1 eye on and off for the next month, including during the Math 121 exam.
This impairment severely effected my ability to write my exam and I believe that this should not be the reason that I fail the Math 121 course. Throughout the year I maintained a passing grade and went into the exam as prepared as I could be given the circumstances. However, after this unfortunate circumstance I was too afraid to discuss with family members, loved ones and university officials due to my insecurity about the situation as well as embarrassment for allowing it to dictate my life and making me looking at myself differently. It caused me to have overwhelming anxiety about walking around alone on campus, going to library at dim lit hours. However, I would no longer like for this miserable event to decide my life/future further. I want to take back my school experience by excelling in my classes as I had fully expected initially.
With all this in mind, I ask of you, Queens University to take all this into account when looking at my final examination mark. I would willing accept extra credit, an additional assignment or exemption of my final exam so I can no longer allow some male dictate my education and campus life further.
