To Whom It May Concern,

My name is Jason Fahrmeyer and I am a student who has just finished third year at Queen¿¿s. I am contacting you today in order to request an appeal for aegrotat standing for one of my classes, ENGL 273. The reason for this is that I was unable to write my exams at the end of the winter semester due to extenuating circumstances that arose with my family. To briefly elaborate, a member of my family has been struggling with mental health issues recently, thus requiring me to take a step away from academics in order to be there for them. This being said, I was required to get in contact with the academic considerations office and complete the necessary forms in order to receive accommodations for my classes. As such, I should have a file that should be accessible for administration to view. Please feel free to look into it as required. Should any clarification be needed, please contact me and I will be sure to provide it. In the file, there should be the documentation that I provided to the academic considerations office in order to get my accommodations approved. There is a form from the hospital displaying that a family member had been admitted to the mental health division, as well as a doctor¿¿s note recommending that I temporarily step away from school in order to help my family tend to the circumstances.

After the department had some time to review my request for accommodations, they approved my application and instructed me to get in contact with my professors to arrange make-up dates. I had already begun to do this prior to the original exam dates, as I knew it was unlikely that I would be able to attend them. With regards to these accommodations that I have arranged with my professors, POLS 364 is capable of giving me a take-home option, POLS 385 has a make-up date for the exam in September, as well as ENGL 200 I have made arrangements to meet with the professor over the summer where he will proctor me and subsequently grade it. I have worked everything out with all courses except ENGL 273, which brings me to my necessity for aegrotat standing.

I should note that I was in contact with the ENGL 273 professor, Nikolai Rodrigues, in order to arrange accommodations and a make-up exam, but his contract expired with the university on April 30th and I became unable to communicate with him. Prior to the contract¿¿s expiration, he informed me of a make-up date for the exam on April 28th, though I was unable to attend due to being home tending to the extenuating circumstances with my family. Following this, I had contacted him asking whether an alternative take-home option or make-up date was possible. He informed me that it was unlikely due to him being incapable of facilitating another exam with the remaining time on his contract. He would be required to create a new copy of the exam with different questions, make arrangements with me to write it, and then mark it and enter the grades in the system. With us being out of time, it was not possible to make the proper arrangements. As such, he advised me that I should instead pursue aegrotat standing in the course in order for my grade to not plummet as a result of not completing the exam. This was his most recommended instruction as I have already completed 65 of the course, thus making me eligible for the aegrotat standing. Professor Rodrigues then also pointed me in the right direction towards the departments I needed to contact in order to begin this process.

After a brief step away from arranging my academic accommodations, due to feeling a bit overwhelmed, I contacted the department in charge of academic appeals in order to get the remaining information needed to complete this process. Thus I was lead towards writing this letter to you with the request for aegrotat standing. I ask that you please grant my appeal for ENGL 273, as I was genuinely incapable of completing the final exam and the course for extenuating circumstances that were entirely out of my control. I was honestly hoping that I would be able to write the exam, and would still be willing if possible, though pursuing aegrotat appears as my only option for not letting my grade in this class plummet.

Lastly, I would like to take the opportunity to thank you for reading my letter and taking my appeal into consideration. If you have any questions about anything, be it with regards to my case file, necessity for additional documentation, or any other information at all, please do not hesitate to contact me. I would be glad to provide whatever I can to you.

Thank you very much in advance,

Jason Fahrmeyer
