Petition Letter: I am submitting an appeal to waive the 21-day deadline for appealing a course instructor's grading decision. I received my final grade on April 26th. I wanted to wait until after I had met with the instructor and gone over my final exam before I made any decisions. As I had to schedule an appointment that worked for both myself and the instructor (I don't live in the Kingston area and work full-time) I wasn't able to meet with the instructor until May 15th. After being unsatisfied with the meeting I had with my instructor, I then contacted the Associate Dean of Studies, Dr. Benard and her first availability to talk was May 23rd. After our conversation outlining my concerns with the grading of my final examination, Dr. Benard agreed I had a case for appeal and advised me to do so, however, that was past the 21-day deadline. I was away for a week from the 24th until June 1st which is why my appeal is just being submitted now. Thank you for considering my appeal to waive the 21-day deadline, I greatly appreciate it.

Petition Letter: I am requesting review of my final exam. On one of the questions on my exam we were asked to fill out a chart on Qualitative Analysis. The question was out of 15 marks. After reviewing my exam with the instructor I was given 0 marks, although components of my answer were correct. Every other question on the exam we were given part marks, even for questions only worth 3 or 4 marks, but for this question, one worth 15 marks, I was given 0 strictly because I didn't answer the question the way the instructor wanted. In the question description the marking outline stated 1 mark for correct headings and 0.5 marks for correct table cells, while I got some of these correct, I was still given a flat 0. There was no justification by the instructor as to why I got 0 when I met with her.
Additionally, as the reviewer will see when they begin to look over my exam, there was another question that was far too difficult given the amount of time allocated to do the question. The question I am talking about pertains to segment-link models. We had seen this type of question on previous exams and in class, however, the extra component added to our question (that she had never added before, we had never seen a component like this before) added another huge layer of complexity that made an already time-constrained question almost impossible to finish thoroughly. This would be evident if you were to go look through all the exams and see who was able to get the correct answer on the question, or even finish it for that matter. You could probably count on one hand the amount of students. I don't know what there is that can be done about this question, but having it worth 45 marks is wrong. If there is anymore supporting documentation that is needed please feel free to email me and I can provide that, but I feel this letter outlines my concerns and should lead the reviewer(s) to what I am talking about.
