Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Atkinson,
I am appealing to drop RTW(3 Years), Drop BCHM 218 (Winter, 2018).
My father has been suffering from kidney failure of which he is a multi-organ transplant patient of the university health network currently on daily dialysis at the Toronto general hospital waiting for a kidney transplant. He has undergone many procedures this last year from two gastrointestinal bi-passes, and a parathyroidectomy. He is stable now and recently cleared by the transplant department to receive a living related kidney transplant. I along with my family have been going through trying times with the search for a possible donor in the family, with my uncle and myself being the first choices in line. This has put a great strain on me, and unfortunately has reflected on my grades this semester. Due to helping my father during his recoveries and daily dialysis, I had to endure and support my father and family resulting in absentees from classes and inability to stay on top of my studies. My father's health began deteriorating during the beginning of the academic school year, putting stress on my studies, and was admitted to the hospital early January, undergoing daily dialysis from 5pm-10pm every day with the exception of Wednesdays and Sundays. As the year progressed it became increasingly difficult for me to keep up with my studies as I was frequently travelling home to be with my father and family. I was not able to meet the final deadline in regard to dropping the BCHM 218 course due to this reason. I believed I was able to endure my workload, however, as time progressed this proved to be difficult as I was unable to attend the majority of my classes and found the workload too intensive to keep up with regarding my circumstances. My future plan is to retake BCHM 218 in the following academic year as I am currently enrolled in two courses for the summer semester. I plan on re-taking MATH 121 this summer as well as taking ENIN 140 to raise my GPA as well and further my academic success. For the summer I have found a tutor whom I will be working with to ensure my academic success in calculus and progress with my studies in Queen's. I humbly request you take these unforeseen extenuating circumstances and allow me to return to my studies this coming September.
