Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Appeals Committee,

I received an email regarding my status as a student asking me to withdraw from Queen¿¿s University for a year. I strongly wish to appeal this. There were unfortunately extenuating circumstances which affected my performance and led to my failing of multiple classes.
When I was 15 years old I was diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. By my high school graduation, my anxiety had been mitigated and had been kept under control for over a year, primarily because of medication I was taking, along with working in treatment with my doctor on a regular basis. However, when I began University, because I had been doing well with my anxiety, I stopped regular treatment and medication, feeling I would be able now to handle the University environment - and did not apply for an academic accommodation in order to aid me in my first year at university. It is now clear that this was a poor judgment call on my part, as my anxiety returned and affected my ability to attend class, hand in assignments, and ask for help when I started to fall behind. I feel terrible and that this has happened, and frustrated at myself for not seeking help when I knew I should have.

As per the note from Dr. Colin Wilson, (that I have attached) he is supporting me in returning to a regular treatment plan to better support me through the school year, re-administering me medication that will help with my day to day anxiety issues, and I am beginning to work with a Counsellor (through my doctor¿¿s referral) who will help me with increasing my coping strategies and help me to deal with issues as they arise throughout the school year. I recognize now how I need to maintain my medical support to successfully complete my education goals.

I am requesting the Appeals Committee please review my plight and implore a reconsideration.
There is nothing I wish more than to be allowed the opportunity to remain at Queen¿¿s next semester as a full-time student in the BAH program. I recognize I will be on academic probation and commit to working diligently towards a degree in history.

I would select my program upon entering my third year and try to heighten my GPA in my second. If my withdraw were to be waived, I would take precautionary measures such as a applying for an academic accommodation and seeking regular treatment to ensure that this does not happen again.

I thank you for having an appeals process where I and others can explain what happened during the course of the year. I am happy to speak to you further if you require any clarification, and I hope that you can see your way to providing me another chance.

Thank you for your consideration,
Emma Seymour

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: I would select my program upon entering my third year and try to heighten my GPA in my second. If my withdraw were to be waived, I would take precautionary measures such as a applying for an academic accommodation and seeking regular treatment to ensure that this does not happen again.

In summary, if allowed to return next semester, I will:

1. apply for an academic accommodation
2. use the study resources that Queen¿¿s has onsite and request assistance when I need it
3. utilize private medical attention in order to combat the anxiety that leads to my poor performance and that stops me from asking for assistance
4. take courses next scholastic year that will allow me to be eligible for a history degree and routinely ask for help when I feel as though I am falling behind, and
5. learn from this that my anxiety can impact areas of my life that are important to me unless I have a solid plan in place and follow it. I know clearly that it will be through following this plan I will be able to improve my academic performance and become a better student.

My goal is to graduate from Queen¿¿s University with a BAH in history, longer term, I hope for a career in history. This year has taught me that in order to achieve my goals I have to do consistent and daily work to ensure my anxiety (and the affects I experience from it) does not impair my ability to achieve my goals.
