Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean (Studies),
I am appealing for late withdrawal from PSYC 100 (Summer 2018) and to re-take the course in Winter. Unfortunately, due to personal extenuating circumstances surrounding family domestic problems that led to psychological and physical challenges, I am unable to sufficiently keep up with course readings and workloads required of me.
A recent crisis that occurred at the beginning of June led to a difficult but necessary decision to transition out of a traumatic situation at home. Figuring out abrupt rehoming, and coping with intense trauma made keeping up with course material (where 20-hour investment is recommended per week) and preparation for my midterm exam extremely difficult.
Although I attempted to keep up and managed completion of many assignments, quizzes, and forum interaction posts, the emotional strain in my personal life continued to increase and truly impacted my ability to keep concentration. The mental instability I felt became debilitating and I do not believe I am fit for fair assessment of my academic abilities during this state.

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: I have reached out for support from various sources: my regional mental health association connected me with a mental health counsellor that I have been speaking to since March. I have been doing on-going work with her to help cope with the struggles surrounding my extenuating circumstances, and my next session will occur on June 29th. I am also currently receiving emotional and financial assistance from trusted loved ones and friends who are offering shelter as a refuge while I work on smoothly transitioning to a stable home.
I reached out to my course professor and to Queen's Accommodations on June 4th. They kindly supported me by deferring my midterm exam (set for June 28th). Upon asking for a second deferral (due to later realizations that I have not yet had sufficient time to overcome and recover from my extenuating circumstance), my professor advised to appeal for late withdrawal, as the course is fast-paced and it did not seem possible to ready myself for the midterm, further assignments and then the Final exam by the course end date in August.
I would be grateful for the opportunity to withdraw and re-take the course in Winter when I can be in a much stronger position to succeed and meet the dates set by the school for exams. Although my extenuating circumstances are unique in that it is difficult to determine full recovery time, I feel that 6 months is sufficient for transitioning to a secure space where I can concentrate on personal growth. Continuing education is important to me and pivotal to my long-term goals of graduating.
