Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Jill Atkinson Associate Dean (Studies),

I am appealing to drop MATH 210 (Winter, 2018). I am hoping that this grade will be removed from my GPA calculation.

I experienced a trauma during the summer of 2017 before starting my second year of studies at Queen's. Corresponding psychological challenges affected my ability to study and concentrate at my usual academic levels and impacted my ability to perform under pressure during testing and exam situations. I found myself more anxious than normal during tests and exams and often found it difficult to relax enough to properly concentrate. Unfortunately, my living circumstances were also under some stress during the winter term. My living arrangements temporarily strained my relationships with my housemates and weakened my social support network during the semester. Together, these challenges particularly impaired my ability to do well on my MATH 210 midterm and final exam, which consequently led to my resulting grade in the course.

Throughout the year I sought help through Queen's Student Wellness and met my counselor Laura. We worked together to find coping and stress/anxiety management strategies that worked for me. I found it extremely helpful to simply have someone I trusted to talk to about the difficult times I was experiencing and I am very grateful for all of her help. Additionally, I opted to take a lighter course load (4 courses) for my winter term once completing my fall semester with the expectation of further academic struggle during my winter term. I also met with an academic advisor to discuss further options for my degree which I discuss below.

In the interest of my future academic success at Queen's, I have taken 2 summer term courses in order to be caught up in my fulfillment of course credits, as well as to improve my overall GPA. In regards to this MATH 210 course in particular, I am considering 2 future options; if I choose to continue the pursuit of my mathematics major and statistics minor BSH, I will retake MATH 210 during the Winter 2019 term in which it is offered. Another option is to pursue a statistics major, mathematics minor BSH instead. In this case, MATH 210 is not a prerequisite for any future courses I need for the degree so I would not retake the course. I am currently in contact with the Math and Statistics Undergraduate Chair, Devon Lin, and I will be discussing the different potential outcomes of these degrees with her.

In terms of personal future success, I met with Laura into the beginning of the summer and I am making consistent efforts improve my mental health through mindful thinking and physical activity. I have been taking the time to enjoy the waterfront and beautiful summer weather with friends. I also returned home to family in Calgary for 2 weeks after my April exams for some much needed family time.

Because of the summer term courses I am currently taking, I will not be missing any course credits starting my Fall 2018 term and I am looking forward to a strong third year at Queen's.

Thank you very much for your time and your consideration of this appeal. I hope you have a wonderful summer.

Carly Hulse

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: (A more detailed academic plan is in my letter of appeal).

I will continue my pursuit of a BSH with the expectation to graduate, as expected, in 2020. I am considering 2 major/minor options as discussed in my letter of appeal and I am in contact with Devon Lin about where the different degrees could take me. Once this summer term is complete, I will not be missing any credit requirements. I expect to take a full course load come September.

Furthermore, I have been working with the AMS Student Life Centre as a front desk staff for the summer, and I have been offered a job at Common Ground for the school year. I am very grateful to have both of these opportunities. This summer position has increased my involvement with Queen's and the Kingston community. I am looking forward to meeting the wonderful people I will be working with during the year at Common Ground.
