Petition Letter: I am appealing my grade for a credit standing in ECON 390 due to a number of coinciding factors.
Primarily, I suffer from a learning condition that makes it difficult to conceptualize concepts and learn in class without the material being reviewed prior to the class. In my 3 years at Queen's, I have had no issue reading online material prior to lectures and then learning more in the lecture; however, the professor in this class provided very little material and was not willing to accommodate the accommodations requested from the disabilities office.
I have spent a lot of time with the learning centre to get accommodations and most professors are very helpful with providing lecture slides or pages to read prior to the class. Unfortunately, in this class, the professor used an outdated course website, that had not been updated since 2016 (http://www.econ.queensu.ca/hartwick/econ390) and did not have a course textbook through which class concepts could be sited. Despite numerous requests, the professor was unwilling to help me overcome my learning disability.
Secondly, over the course of the winter, my grandfather was diagnosed with cancer. This magnified the difficulties I had learning in a class only setting, as none of the concepts could be easily grasped or were available for review afterwards. The coinciding difficulties in class and family matters resulted in many sleepless nights and hours spent on the phone with representatives from Good2Talk to overcome suicidal thoughts. This confidential helpline helped me a lot and I am proud to have made a full recovery; however, during the three-month winter span my marks in Econ 390 fell and were not indicative of my academic performance.
I have attached my learning disability documentation; however, as Good2Talk is a confidential line there is no documentation. If you would like, please contact me and I will attempt to obtain phone records of my outgoing phone calls.
While this was a situation that seriously impeded my academic performance, I believe that I have built a strong learning foundation to adapt to situations like this in the future and have built a strong network of friends and family to overcome family illnesses in the future. As a result, I am requesting consideration for a credit standing in Econ 390, as I believe the poor academic performance was an extenuating circumstance and will not happen again.
