Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Dear, Associate Dean (Studies)
I am appealing to drop PSYC 231, and CLST 201(Winter 2018) from my transcript, and appeal for a credit standing for PSYC 221, PSYC 236 (Winter 2018).
Beginning in the end of the Fall(2017) semester and throughout the winter(2018) semester I encountered psychological challenges which later led to a diagnosis of anxiety and mild depression from the Queen's Student Wellness Services. Due to the challenges I faced during this period I was unable to work to my best ability and fully grasp the course concepts presented to me. At the time I was unable to stay focused while in lecture, reading assigned course material, studying for exams, and working on assignments. I found it difficult to focus my attention on any particular task long enough to understand what I was reading or gain what I was intended to form the course material. As a result of the circumstances, I was unable to get out of bed, leave my house, and keep up with a daily routine for long periods of time. I as well experienced severe anxiety, and on multiple occasions experienced panic attacks before midterms and exams resulting in the failure to write the exam, or perform poorly on it, as I was not in the right frame of mind to succeed. I experienced periods where all I could do was sleep and periods where I was unable to sleep, both in turn affected how I performed in school. As a result of my difficulties, through the course of the winter semester I began to lose motivation to participate in the things I enjoyed doing, one of them being school. Because of the challenges mentioned above I was unable to attend class, ask for extra help when I knew I needed it, and perform well on tests and assignments, which ultimately affected my academic performance negatively. After I noticed my performance worsening, failing grades, and the overall affect it had on my academic career I decided to get help and see a counsellor from the Queen's Student Wellness Services. I started seeing a counselor mid-way through second semester, and have continued since.
I am appealing to drop PSYC 231, and CLST 201(Winter 2018) from my transcript, and appeal for a credit standing for PSYC 221, PSYC 236 (Winter 2018).

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: My academic plan is to lighten my course load next school year by taking four classes a semester instead of five, the remaining two courses will be spread out and taken in the summer term. Due to the challenges I faced during my second year, I have not obtained enough credits to be considered a third year student, one of my main goals is to get back on track and receive the credits I need to graduate, even if it takes me longer then four years. The classes I intend to take in Fall(2018) include CLST 305, LATN 110A, PSYC 351, and CLST 309. In the Winter(2019) semester I plan on taking CLST 304, CLST 306, LATN 110B, and retaking CLST 201 as it is a required course for my major. All the courses I am going to be taking this 2018/2019 school year will be used towards completing my major and minor. Taking four courses a semester will allow me to better focus my time on each class and avoid putting myself in overly stressful situations. I will also seek help from a tutor or my TA's in the courses I feel I need the extra support in and will take advantage of the resources offered on campus. My goal is to maintain regular meetings with my counselor and doctor and full heartedly do the steps suggested by both in order to improve my psychological well-being. I am taking advantage of the resources offered by the student wellness services by taking a course offered on mindfulness to help with stress, anxiety, and focus, therefore I am better prepared for Fall 2018. As I follow the steps mentioned above, I will be able to get better grades, cope with issues I am faced with, perform well on all tasks presented to me, and take care of myself. My overall goal is to keep improving myself, get better grades and learn to manage my psychological health therefore something such as this does not happen again. I enjoy being a Queen's student and am determined to better myself in whatever way need be to continuously improve and get back to where I was.
