To the Associate Dean (Studies),

I am writing to appeal to have the 21-day deadline to drop a course waived. Due to extenuating circumstances that I was experiencing, I had withdrawn from studies for the academic year 2017-2018. At the time, I misunderstood that there was a further step required for having courses dropped from my transcript; I had thought that I had already had this taken care of by withdrawing from studies. I had been hospitalized during the Fall 2017 term since October 22, 2017 until past the end of term. During that time, I did not know when I would be discharged from hospital, nor when I would be able to resume studies. I had communicated with the professor for the course and was told that they would submit an Incomplete grade for me based on medical reasons (attached).

My extenuating circumstance is mental illness that is debilitating to my academic performance; as I was unable to focus during lectures, and it prevented me from being able to keep up with readings and assignments. I have been hospitalized on a few previous occasions and I am currently hospitalized, which has forced me to withdraw from multiple terms of studies. During these hospitalizations, I have been receiving treatments for my mental illness. These treatments for my mental illness, affect my memory to some degree, as well as affecting my ability to focus and process information.

Due to the combination of hospitalization, treatments, and focus on improving my mental health, I have not realized until recently that a failure had appeared on my transcript instead of dropped course or incomplete, and that I am required to submit an appeal to have the course dropped.

Please consider my circumstances, as my academic performance in courses during the last two terms that I completed (Winter 2015 and Fall 2015) had been much higher. Also, my grade for the prerequisite course (PHIL 361) of the course that I am appealing to drop (PHIL 362) was A.

Although I cannot predict the future, I plan to return to studies in September 2018 for the 2018-2019 academic year. I am trying my best to complete the requirements for my degree program, thus have continued to enroll even if my condition could possibly require me to withdraw, again. My goal is to, hopefully, return to studies for the 2018-2019 academic year, and to take the minimum course load required for full-time studies; however, I am unsure as to whether I will be able to accomplish this, as I am still being treated in hospital. I plan to take on the minimum course load to, hopefully, compensate for the problematic chronic symptoms that are detrimental to my academic performance.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Nancy Chua
