Petition Letter: I appeal to waive the requirement to withdraw for one year. My GPA this year was not good; there were reasons of my own attitude and falses from my first year, but after thinking it twice I still feel extenuating circumstances had more important role in my situation. I have experienced a winding year. There were 3 major extenuating circumstances directly affected my academic performance. The first extenuating circumstance was tax forms. My family is new immigrant of Canada from China and became taxable residences of Canada in 2017. I first was asked by my father to submit my own tax form by myself in September 2017. It did not take me very long to fill out at first. My father then called me by phone in early October and told me that he met some trouble filling it out and asked me for help. I had to collect data to fill out the forms during school time in that period. I sent the email which has our tax forms attached to my father in late October and thought it would be done. My dad was not happy with paying the amount of tax calculated. I redid the form twice and sent him the final version in early Novermber. The second extenuating circumstance took place in the new year period. BIOL 201 was my second last final exam of 2017 fall semester. I was having a bad cold and stomachache in the morning when I got up at 11am and the exam was about to start. I physically was not in the mode of taking the exam but it would be a bad decision to delay it because I did not want to prepare for it again and the last final exam was coming too. I went to the exam while forgetting taking my phone out of my pocket before the exam starts due to headache from the cold. When I went back to the exam room form washroom, one proctor came and asked me to take my phone out. My mental was on the edge and I did not do well in the last final exam either. The 2 grades had very bad impact to my GPA. The last extenuating circumstance happened this year. I was grazed by a bike in April on the way back from school after a BIOL 202 laboratory. It did not hurt badly and the rider seems badly drunken and may be using drugs, I did not ask him to take me to the hospital. My toe nails both went off the next day and they still hurt now. I was not able to walk for about a week. I could not begin my exam review until very late and my grades in 2018 winter were badly impacted by this accident. I did have a bad attitude due to change of my plan from BASH biol to BAS math, and I will turn this dissatisfaction to motivation this year.
Academic Plan
Academic Plan: Last year for me was a year of studying as one who I never considered, a math student. I spent the 2017 fall semester to try 2 courses of maths; it was not for me. I applied to change my plan back to biology this May and have it denied. I want to switch back to BASH biology because it is what I wish to do for my entire life and it is the reason I came to Queen's. Indeed to apply again to change my plan back to biology, I will retake BIOL 102, 103, 201, and 202 in this year. I will take CHEM 281 general organic chemistry and EPID 301 principle of epidemiology for the fall semester. I will take ENSC 301 environmental assessment and ANAT 316 the human visceral system in the winter semester. My issues are obvious: I am susceptible to the environment. QBridge was too loose for me as a schedule before first year of undergraduate that I could not turn my mind back to study at first in first year which led to my failure of entering biology; I was then affected by the bad mood of being forced to change my plan in the beginning of second year which made me felt not motivated at all. My strategies now are first taking less laboratories, to release more time for each courses. My second strategy is making more balanced schedules. My schedules last year were not quite balanced and I had problems getting up sometimes. I hope this academic plan is substantial enough.
