Petition Letter: To whom it may concern,
I am writing to appeal my final grade in ENG100 from the most recent winter term. During this time, I began taking a new anti-psychotic medication to treat severe Clinical Depression and the more extreme symptoms of my Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. I responded very poorly to said medication and became suicidal and relapsed in self harm for the first time in over a year. When I then stopped taking the medication, I had terrible symptoms of withdrawal including but not limited to frequent nausea, vomiting and fainting. At this same time, I had a very large english essay due, that I attempted but was simply unable to complete. My marks at the time were high enough that I would still be able to declare myself an English Minor, and so it was an acceptable and necessary sacrifice in order to preserve other aspects of my academic career.
On top of this, other hardships in my life prevented me from fulfilling major aspects of my courses, like for example attending classes everyday. During the past year I have made the decision to cut ties with my entire family. This was a neccesity in order to preserve my own safety and separate myself from a lifetime of physical and emotional abuse. This, obviously, took a huge emotional toll on me. In addition this, my roommate¿¿s frequent use of illicit substances brought back painful memories of the abuse. This resulted in my sleeping, or rather attempts at sleeping, in a common room of residence for 2 weeks despite the Assistant Student Services Manager at the BISC being made fully aware of the situation. This lack of sleep and terrible headspace did not create a suitable environment for learning and was therefore detrimental to my ability to achieve the marks that I know I am capable of.
I ask that you please reconsider the final grade I received in my ENG100 class, as my marks prior to these instances were far more reflective of my linguistic abilities. I also believe that it is worth mentioning how close I came to achieving the necessary marks to enter an English Minor, in spite of my personal and health issues. I maintained my position as President of the Student Government and volunteered with a local Brownie Unit while achieving decent marks in all of my other courses. I hope that this in combination with the details of my struggles may aid in your decision pertaining to my abilities to excel in future English courses at Queen¿¿s University.
I thank you kindly for your time and consideration,
Hayden Fontaine
