Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Hi,
My name is Zeyana Laplante and I am a 2nd-year aboriginal student here and I am writing this letter to request aggregate standing,
I know my letter may seem late but I was not aware of this appeal process until recently and had to get medical documentation together to submit the following, so I apologize for that.
Due to extenuating medical, social, cultural and language issues beyond my control that I encountered during my first year, 2017/18 academic year. I wish to appeal the results of my standing in PSYC 100, SOCY 122, HEALTH 101 and SPAN 111 and ask that you consider my term work in that course such that I will be credited with a pass rather than a fail.
As a high-performance athlete (National Champion, Triple Gold medalist at 2017 North American Indigenous Games) time management was always one of my strengths. Developing eating disorders, depression, insomnia, anemia during the 2017/18 year completely changed my ability to stay on a productive schedule. I studied as best I could ¿however my ability to concentrate, sleep, be positive was affected and the results were disastrous¿ leading me here to write this appeal.
The impact of the fail in this course is significant. I feel as though I have let myself and everyone around me down. I have received a letter from OSAP indicating I am at risk of not being funded due to my academic probation.
That said I successfully passed an online correspondence course during the summer of 2018 to make it apparent that I am motivated and passionate to successfully complete University.
I am a capable student. However issues I encountered contributed in a major way to my substandard performance during my courses.
I have taken necessary measures to lower my risks of my issues returning by taking necessary medication and continuing to be present within student wellness and counseling services as I was throughout last year. Now that I am being treated and am rested, I feel much better, I have also discovered the benefits of the aboriginal student service center here on campus.
Last year I literally collapsed mentally and emotionally. As a result, my final grades were very poor and I feel healthy and clear to start this 2nd year on a new foot, I, therefore, ask that you prorate my term work results accordingly.
Changing from a French language High School curriculum to University English was a challenge - I sought extra help and this has proved beneficial. I will be better equipped this year after a summer of work in downtown Toronto.
Going forward, I am well on my way to a more sound understanding of University curriculum study requirements and am more in tune with myself and my personal health and this will be reflective in my grades this coming year.
I would, therefore, request a review of the following courses and ask that you credit me with a Pass based on my term work.
Yours truly, Zeyana Laplante, Student ID: 20060475
