Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,

I am appealing to drop Math 385 (Winter, 2018), Math 210 (Winter, 2018), Math 281 (Winter, 2018), and Econ 255 (Winter, 2018) from my transcript completely as well as appealing to waive the 21-day or one term deadline to drop Math 280 (Fall, 2017) and Math 474 (Fall, 2017).

I started off this year strong but I soon made a 180 degrees turn. I started the year off eager to learn, motivated to attend all my classes and learn the material. However, a handful of untimely events impacted my education greatly. Firstly, I began to fall ill often. My physical health went on a roller coaster and I experienced everything from colds to stomach flus to viruses. Unfortunately, most of this occurred during examinations so I was unable to participate in many of my assessments. This also prevented me from attending my classes and tutor sessions regularly so I quickly fell behind on my course work as well. Fortunately, most of my professors were accommodating and shifted most of the weight of my grades onto my final exams. However, to make things far worse, I was involved in a terrible car accident before my final exams. Unfortunately, the pain from the accident would sometimes keep me up at night or disrupt my sleep. This would further impact my education because it would interfere with my focus and ability to study since I would be tired from the lack of sleep. In turn, I would be too distracted by the pain (as a result of the accident) and tiredness to focus on studying and successfully absorb the course material. Furthermore, I also got a stomach virus during the final exams. This caused me to be on bed rest and therefore was unable to even attend my final exams. I did go see a doctor and obtained a doctor's note as proof of this. All of these occurrences also shifted my focus from my responsibilities and as a result I did not appeal to drop math 280 and math 474 by the deadline.

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: I feel that I have come up with a very strong plan to ensure my success in the next academic year. To begin, I am more motivated than I have ever been to raise my GPA and to reach my potential. Furthermore, I have started going to the gym and taking part in morning runs to help with my time management skills as well as my anxiety. I have also found that staying active and eating healthy has really helped improve my health. One indication of this is that I have started to get stomach aches less frequently. I have also started seeing doctors or going to the walk-in clinics as soon as an issue arises. Also, I have made a clear plan of which courses to take and when to take them to ensure that I graduate and meet all the requirements of my degree by the end of 2019. I have also already reached out to tutors to ensure that I have all the aid that I will need if I find that I am struggling with any of my courses. In addition to that, I also plan on sitting with an academic advisor to ensure that my course plan is bullet-proof. I have also already re-enrolled in the courses that I am appealing to drop. In addition, I saw an on-campus counselor in the winter term of 2018 who suggested that I start using an agenda to help manage my time and prioritize my responsibilities which I have followed up on. Furthermore, I have also started to read a proclaimed self-help book which I hope will help with my issues with anxiety. Lastly, I have seen a physical rehabilitation center over the summer to help with the pain I suffered from the car accident and am happy to report that the pain has subsided significantly and it no longer disrupts my sleep. I will also continue to seek medical help from that center throughout the school year to ensure that the neck and back pain I acquired from the accident does not get out of hand again. I strongly believe that all of these acts together will ensure that I stay focused on my goals.
