Dear Associate Dean (Studies),
I am appealing to late drop CHEM 223 and for credit standing for CHEM 211, CHEM 212 and STATS 263.
During my second year of university my mental health issues had reached a peak. While I am normally able to work through these rough patches, that year I found myself unable to perform as I usually do. Many aspects of my daily life were affected. The most significant aspects that affected my schoolwork were my inability to sleep, difficulty focusing, lack of energy and lack of motivation. Despite trying my hardest, I was not able to understand and implement concepts I was taught, my brain was not performing as it normally does. I also suffered bouts of anxiety, making test taking very difficult. I decided to not attempt to drop classes during the drop period as I believed if I worked hard enough I could do well in these classes. Unfortunately, I did not fully take into consideration my own mental health at that time.
It has taken me a long time to find the courage to appeal these classes, however I can assure you that after my second year of university I did everything in my power to implement changes that would help me achieve academic success. I sought the help of a psychologist and attended therapy sessions on multiple occasions. Over the past two years, I removed myself from toxic environments and relationships that were negatively affecting my mental health and created a positive learning environment for myself. Taking active steps greatly helped my mental health and in return yielded positive academic results.
My journey is reflected through my transcript. Although my second semester of second year was more successful than my first, I admit that I still struggled with my mental health. Nonetheless, this has helped me listen to myself, put my own well-being first in an effort to succeed in life. My grades have definitely improved alongside my quality of life, and although there have been some hiccups, I hope that my gradual academic improvement and this letter will help you consider my appeal.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Renee Martin 10137403
