Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean and Board of Academic Appeal,

My name is David Stehr, I am an International Student at Queen's. My situation is the following, due to the new Canadian Immigration Laws my initial application for my study permit to re-enter Canada was rejected on August 28th, therefore instead of arriving on-time for the Fall semester, I had to re-apply with additional documentation. This resulted in me missing the last three weeks of school, I only returned on the 21st of September, two days after my VISA was approved.

Today, Monday the 24th of September, I visited my Academic Counselor to make sure I am still on track to graduate for this coming Spring, and I learned that I still needed 3.0 more ECON credits to finish the 400 level critieria for the Economics part of my degree. My problem is that I was initially enrolled in ECON435 but since I did not know when I would be able to return to Canada and the proportions of the academic workload, I dropped it before the deadline(September 18th). Now that I am back and was able to evaluate my workload for the coming semester, I am positive that I can complete the course to the best of my abilities.

During my exile, I put it a request for academic exemption since I was not able to keep up with the in-class participation for my PSYCH classes and other ECON classes, but I was still able to complete all the online tasks and assignments required. ECON435 featured very little on ONQ, which was another reason I chose to drop the class initially, since I was unsure how I would be able to study the course material without any notes/lecture slides or a text-book.

I hope you allow me to re-add the class and complete my degree so I am able to graduate this spring.
Thank you for your time,
David Stehr

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: I consulted with an Academic Advisor(Heather Carter) before submitting this appeal and she encouraged me to submit this appeal due to my circumstances were quite extreme and she also believed that my actions were justified since I did not know exactly when my study-permit would be granted.

I was able to keep up my studies to best of my abilities online, including my extracurricular activities with the Queen's Economic Affairs Society(QEAS), this shows that I am both motivated and committed to finishing my degree on time and am willing to push through even during difficult periods.

The only consideration the Advisor(Heather) suggested is that I ask either the Board of Studies or Professor Majumdar that I get an extension for the initial mid-term to ensure that I am able to prepare myself to best of my abilities while managing my other course-load.
