Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To Whom It May Concern:

When I started at Queen¿¿s in 2010, I was 18 years old and fairly clueless as to what I wanted to do with my future. I neglected my education and was rightfully put on academic probation and that followed with a requirement to withdraw for one year. I returned in 2014 only to realize that I still did not have the discipline that I needed in order to succeed. I failed not one but two courses very irresponsibly as I failed to do the coursework properly for one and failed to drop one before the deadline. I was given another requirement to withdraw for three years.

I am 26 years old now and heavily regret not taking my education more seriously. A large part of why I did not take my education seriously was because I was working my way up at a local restaurant and becoming a full time bartender and making money was more alluring than getting better grades unfortunately.

Now, after all these years of being a server and a bartender, I realize that bartending cannot be my career. It does not grant you the freedoms that I now desire as a mother and a wife. I gave birth to my first child in July 2018. I would love for my son to attend a university, perhaps Queen¿¿s University, just like his grandfather (who holds two masters degrees from Queen¿¿s) and hopefully like his mother.

I write you today to please waive my requirement to withdraw, and to allow me to return to school. I have a well thought out and realistic plan for my academic future that will follow. Finishing this degree has become the most important priority in my life since I have had my son. I want him to be able to look at me as a role model in the future and not a failure.

I really hope to receive a positive response to my appeal. While I am still working at a restaurant, my priority will be my education as I am only working part time, under 25 hours a week.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I hope to hear back from you soon.

Cheers

Maleeha Ghani

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: I have 45 units left to finish in order to do a General Arts program at Queen¿¿s. Two more 3 unit ENGL courses and the rest are all electives. If it goes well, I will put in the extra work to do a Bachelor of Arts Honours program. I want to take one or two classes on a part time basis every term to finish my schooling. In total I would like to complete 18 units a year till the degree is completed.

I am also hoping to take the two classes that I had failed in 2015 to raise my grades.

I am keen to take the courses from the Global Action and Engagement certificate that Queen¿¿s is now offering, in hopes of combining the certificate with my degree. I would like to pursue a career in public relations in global affairs or in immigration after my schooling is finished.
