Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,
I am writing this appeal letter to remove my Fail records of two courses on my transcript: DEVS 204 (Winter 2017) and CLST 102 (Fall 2017).
I did not submit this appeal until now is because I have retaken DEVS 240 in 2018 winter and got a better grade, and taking CLST 102 this semester, and so far the result is in a good situation, I wanted to prove that I can pass this two courses after I overcome my extenuating circumstances.
I have encountered some family issues since my second year (2016 Fall), and my grades were significantly affected. My parents divorced, but they were still fighting with money, and their fights troubled me a lot. As an international student, my tuition and spending are quite expensive, and I could not simply cut off my connection with them and apply for a student loan to support my study. I was in a tough situation without family support, which increased my feeling of insecurity and anxiety.
I was in a depressed situation and found it was challenging to keep up with my courses. Instead of trying harder, I just let some easy courses fall. The reason why I failed DEVS 240 was I did not take the final paper seriously. And I also missed one test of CLST 102, and it influenced my final score a lot.
It was until the end of fall semester 2017; I realized that I could not let my academic performance go down like this. I was acting like a naive teenager, and I thought not going to class and getting bad grades would make my parents realize how much did they hurt me. In fact, I should be the one to take responsibility for my life and my future.

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: I also had a serious conversation with my mother when I went back to China this summer, now our relationship became more close. She promised to support my study and further life goals as long as I need. If anything happens beyond my control in the future, at least I would not risk my grades again.
For my future plan, I would like to continue graduate school after I graduate from queens. Despite the failure of these two courses, I enjoyed my study in DEVS and CLST. If you take a look at my transcript, you could see that my GPA is improving and I am capable of getting good grades in DEVS and CLST courses. I asked the Arts and Science office, and they told me it would be possible to appeal to remove the failure records from the transcript.
I have been meeting my counsellor consistently, and she is willing to provide a supplementary letter to prove my extenuating situation back then, and now I am moving on and will never let other issues to prevent me from achieving my goals for graduate school. (The letter will be sent directly from the Student Wellness Services at queens.)
I hope you could consider my request for removing the fail records on my transcript, for giving me another chance to continue studying what I have learnt at queens in graduate school.
Sincerely,
Qingyun Li
