Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To the Associate Dean,
My name is Sarah Vermaeten and I am writing to you in a time of need. I wish the circumstances weren¿¿t so dire, but finally being in a good state of mind I am able to consider my actions over the past few years. I have struggled with severe anxiety and depression and am only now in a place where things are looking up for me. I should tell you that I am now on my way to healthy recovery, and am looking into my future, in hopes to have the chance of getting into graduate school.
I understand any request I make might seem unconventional, but it would be greatly appreciated if you would take the time to consider what can be done.

I am looking to appeal most of my third year of school (2016-2017 academic year). This was my year of deep psychological illness, where I was mostly absent both mentally and physically. The classes I am looking to receive a CR are PSYC 332 where I received a D, PSYC 333 where I received a D-, HLTH 333 where I received a C-, HLTH 315 where I received a C, HLTH 323 where I received a C, and PSYC 350 where I achieved an F.
I am desperately hoping to change these to a CR. Without this, I don¿¿t know if it is possible for me to attain a GPA in order to attend graduate school.
The time in which I completed these courses was extremely difficult for me and my family. As of October 2016, I spoke to health-care professionals, who diagnosed me with both anxiety and depression. I was put on medication that treats both of these symptoms, that which numbed me and left me lying in bed for days on end. I was not in school for a majority of the time, and if I was I could rarely give my full attention. I tried my very best to keep up with school but ultimately my illness overcame me and I was not able to succeed. As I entered my fourth academic year, my mental health slightly improved, though not dramatically, but I was able to achieve some better results in school. It is not until recently, end of summer 2018, that I have a somewhat clear state of mind, and have recognized the severe impacts that my third year of school has made. That is why I write to you today under such dire circumstances, as I now have an understanding of the implications of these actions. I feel immense anxiety thinking about how late this appeal is, but it is the only time through the past couple years that I have come to terms with my illness and am now looking forward. I was able to truly reflect on my actions and recognize that I am not the same person that I was during my third year. I was unaware of the toll that those actions had taken until now that I have aspirations for graduate school and a passion for my program.

As I look ahead to the future, I fear that the mistakes and tragedies of my third year will hold me back and ruin my chances of a graduate program. As you can see from my 4th year grades, I was able to achieve better marks as I had a more clear mind. I am now in 5th year, where my mental health has begun drastically improve, and if you were to see any of my marks at this moment it is only A and A+. I am taking a lighter course load in order to ensure more focus and achieve the highest grades possible. However, even with the extremely high grades that I have now, I believe it will be nearly impossible for me to be accepted to a school with these marks weighing me down. I am also willing to take extra courses next semester or during the summer in order to raise my average once again.
If you would please take this appeal into deep consideration, please understand that it would mean the difference between me obtaining a spot in graduate school or not. If these courses were marked as CR, I could be judged more fairly on the student that I am now in these past 2 years rather than the unfit person I was in third year. I am aware of how late the appeal is but please understand the condition that I have been in where I have not been able to understand the implications of my actions fully until now that I am focused on my self, and have truly reflected.

Thank-you, and please let me know if there is any other information I need to provide to proceed with this appeal.
