Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To the Associate Dean,

I am appealing to drop MATH 111 (Fall, 2018) and STAT 263 (Fall, 2018).

Without realizing I took on a heavy course load consisting of 3 mathematics and statistics related courses which includes the aforementioned courses as well as MATH 121. This has resulted in me falling behind and being unable to keep up with the demand of all 3 courses. I did not realize that as part of my Computer Science degree plan that STAT 263 was meant to be taken year but had no prerequisites hence why I ended up taking it the first year.

I started off performing well in my courses as I was being eased into the content; however, once the workload started to pile up, I was unable to handle it. This is not helped by the fact that I have struggled to settle in at Queen's due to the large culture shock that I have faced and having failed to establish any sort of social connections which has led to a state of depression. I have not had any peers to ask for a helping hand to assist me in the difficulties I have been facing in the courses I have taken. Thus, I have fallen behind within these courses past the point that a passing grade is salvageable.

My plan of action for the future is to seek out counselling to help me deal with my depression so that it does not affect my future courses. Additionally, I plan to seek out clubs so that I can build social connections and find solace at Queen's University as I understand that I am unable to work effectively and handle the pressures of university without friends.

Thank you for your consideration,
Ali Naqvi
