Petition Letter: To the Associate Dean of Arts and Science, Dr. Johanne Bénard,
I am a third year Arts and Science student. I am appealing to drop DRAM 306 (Fall 2018). I would like to drop this course because I have not been able to complete the assignments required to pass, and failing would have a negative impact on my future academic career. This is the only course for which I require a late-drop, as I am able to drop ENGL 200 (Full Year) anytime and I am currently in a position to pass CWRI 295 (Fall 2018). These are the three courses in which I am currently enrolled.
My academic performance this semester has been greatly hindered by unfortunate personal circumstances. I've struggled with my mental health for many years and had noticed a downward trend in my mood over the summer. This September I opted to take a lighter course load in anticipation of further stress, but these problems became overwhelming over the course of this semester. I have been seeing Dr. Forster (physician) and Dr. Campbell (psychiatrist) at Student Wellness Services for support for these issues (letter of support included). Looking at grades I have achieved in the past, it is evident that I typically take my courses very seriously and fully apply myself. The fact that I have not been able to do that this semester is an indication that my health and, consequently, my ability to keep up with DRAM 306 and ENGL 200, are at an all-time low.
Looking to the future, I anticipate becoming a part-time student while I acquire the means to take a year or two off from university. I believe I would be more successful taking only one or two courses each semester, while continuing to seek help from Student Wellness Services. Taking a break from university would allow me to revaluate my personal and academic goals as well as put my mind in a better place for when I decide to return to my studies. I look forward to getting to a place where I can cope with my internal distress well enough to fulfill my potential.
Sincerely,
Tia Lunn
