Petition Letter: To the Associate Dean,
Hello, my name is Lameez Parthab, a second-year student. My student number is 20068613. I am writing this appeal to see if I can get three of my first year, second semester courses turned into CR due to circumstances that began in February and then an additional major tragedy that only occurred right before my final exams in April.
When I went home for the long weekend in February my mother informed me that my father and she were no longer on great terms and were severely fighting. Of course, there¿¿s no way to prove this so I¿¿m not sure what kind of documentation I can attach with this. The main problem was that my younger two brothers still lived at home and my parents did nothing really to hide the fact that they were close to divorcing. There were times when the older of the two would call me, asking why his mother was crying and I would have to explain that everything was fine and that it was nothing significant. With the stress of school, I now additionally was constantly watching over my two younger brothers to make sure their mental health wasn¿¿t suffering from our parents¿¿ actions. This was not enough to warrant any academic action on my part as I know many other students have a harder time but it did affect my grades.
Luckily, to help me through the entire mess was my boyfriend. We were very close and I honestly knew at the time that I wanted to marry the boy. He was the only person I felt that I could rely on. The only issue at the time was that we were long distance as he lived in America. Nonetheless, I was happy and he managed to pull me through any rough patches I had. On April 9th, he stopped texting me. I was distraught but focused on my exams because I figured it wasn¿¿t anything serious. After a week or so though, I became seriously concerned and looked further into it. I knew this man had spent four years in the military and was discharged once he had served his term. We spoke about it but I could tell it was a difficult subject for him ¿¿ he had lost many of his friends and he was a medical combatant so he had seen many haunting scenes. After searching up his name online, I unfortunately stumbled across his obituary. While his family knew about me, they had no way to contact me and so I wasn¿¿t informed of his passing away. Contacting a friend of his to find out what happened, I was told that he had committed suicide. and if it¿¿s not enough, I have text receipts and private photos of him on my phone. But other than that, I¿¿m not sure what else I can provide.
I don¿¿t think I could even begin to describe the absolute agony I felt when my eyes found a picture of him next to his death date. Frankly, I was in utter shock. I had an exam to write the next day, which I proceeded to do, but if I¿¿m being honest, I can barely remember much of what I wrote. I¿¿m rambling, and I apologize for that, but even describing these events is very hard for me to do.
I wrote the majority of my exams in a daze and because of that, my grades tanked significantly. The year was over though and I didn¿¿t even realize I could write for an appeal. Only when I spoke to two academic advisors this November did I learn about appeals and they both strongly encouraged me to write one. The event that took place in April was a large reason for why I ended with 50s in my core courses. If we looked at the first semester, we could see that I received a B in my biology course but in second semester I received a D. I managed to pass but because of such poor marks, I can no longer get into the major I need. I am in the concurrent education program, a program very difficult to get into so I know I am capable of decent marks. But to pass the program, I need at least B¿¿s in my core courses, which I currently do not have. Turning the core courses I have into CR would allow me to still achieve this.
The academic advisors that I spoke to are Vicky Andrews, Education Advisor, and Kerri Andrews, a general Academic Advisor. I postponed writing the appeal from the end of November to now because I felt guilty at using someone¿¿s passing to boost my marks but after much consultation, I have come to realize that this event did majorly affect my marks and that I need to talk to someone about it to try and get the help I need.
