My names Deshane Nembhard. I am appealing to receive a credit standing for SOCY 275 (Fall 2018). This course is about crime and deviance and other stuff related to criminal behaviour. The content of this course became extremely overwhelming.This is due to the fact that it hit a soft spot for me based off of my family history. My father was incarcerated and deported so i don't get to see him often only when i visit the country he lives in (Jamaica) and that isn't very often. The course material brought me lots of anxiety making it extremely hard to read and/or work on assignments. When ever i had to either study for a test or write an assignment reading through the material was extremely difficult because it made me miss my father and everything we had/ could've had it brings back memories of his criminal activity, it brings back painful memories on the fact that he is gone causing me to be incapable of properly engaging in my studies in order for me to become successful in this course. I found that avoiding such content made life much easier which resulted in poor performance. Growing up in the neighbourhood and the type of life i had i was instilled with the mindset of pushing through and that if you cant make it out or through that you're weak. This lead me to not inputting an appeal until now because my friends at queens finally opened my mindset that i cant let my past hold me down that i need to do something in order to benefit my education. In addition to what has happened with my family issues this course brings extra anxiety to my personal life. Since I am an African American male who didn't grow up in the greatest place has experienced racial profiling, seen lots of crime, have had many of friends and family incarcerated and/ or killed due to that lifestyle studying and reading over such material would bring me extreme anxiety and sadness. I understand that my type of circumstance may not carry concern to the school based upon the general population of queens university but my friends expressed to me that queens does a great job at actually taking into consideration all issues that may affect people differently and will provide accommodation for their needs.
