Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Johanne Bénard,
Associate Dean (Studies)
I am appealing to drop HIST 337 (Fall, 2018) and HIST 400 (Fall, 2018) after November 8th 2018, which was the deadline to drop Fall semester classes.
At the beginning of October of 2018, I was dealing with extenuating circumstances that peaked between November 3rd and November 4th, 2018, while my parents were away. Almost right up until the deadline on November 8th, even though I currently live with my parents, I had not spoken to anyone about what I was going through because I have always been able to solve any challenges I have on my own and I was determined to do so again. The symptoms I was experiencing during this time were preventing me from fulfilling the larger workload and time spent in class that accompanies seminar courses, which is why I am appealing to drop both of my seminar courses, but neither of my lecture courses, which were shorter in class length and slightly less in workload. I was not sleeping or eating and I had severe headaches constantly. It made concentrating on school nearly impossible for long amounts of time. My academic performance was not up to my usual standards at all because of my situation outside of school.
I would have dropped these two courses prior to the deadline if I could have. November 8th was the last day to drop classes in the Fall semester, but my parents did not return until the 10th of November, and I needed to talk to them about dropping the classes, as well as about everything I was going through, before I could make the decision to drop HIST 377 and HIST 400. This was a big decision for me that caused me a lot of stress, adding to the stress I was already feeling due to my circumstances, as I have never needed to ask for help at school before. I spoke to my family about what I was going through on the 10th of November when they returned home. With their help, I decided to speak to an advisor at Queen¿¿s University.
On November 13th, I spoke to Kathyrn Morrissey, an Academic Advisor with the Faculty of Arts and Science and she told me about the process to drop classes after the deadline, which quelled some of my worries.
On November 21st, I was able to go to an appointment with my doctor, Dr. Brown, who was able to further help me with my extenuating circumstances and supported me in my decision to appeal to drop these classes after the November 8th deadline. She also wrote a letter, as supporting documentation for this appeal, which I have attached with this letter.
After I spoke to Kathyrn Morrissey at Dunning Hall about my situation, with her expertise and my family¿¿s support, I was able to draft a future plan. I am appealing to drop these courses from Fall 2018, and in the following Fall semester, which is to say, Fall 2019, I will take 9 units of seminars from 333-499, in order to finish my undergraduate. In the future, now that my parents and my doctor know what I was going through, if anything were to ever happen again, I will have the support I need to make a decision before a deadline, or to stop a situation from becoming so severe. I am learning to reach out for help when I need it and my family and the advisors at school have been a great help to me. Since letting them know what I was struggling with, my symptoms have lessened and I am confident and determined to well in the upcoming Winter semester.
Thank you for reading my letter and for reviewing my appeal.
Sincerely,
Vida Gabriela Mack Hollywood
