Petition Letter: To whom it may concern,
My name is Shiyi Huang (student number: 20114406) who is currently a first-year student studying at the Faculty of Arts and Science in Queen¿¿s University. I am appealing to drop STAT 263 (Fall, 2018).
My extenuating circumstance beyond my control is related to my mental health. The illness and death of my grandfather has great impact on my mind. During November and December, I have experienced depression leading to insomnia. Since I felt painful and fragile every time I flashback to my memory with my grandfather, it became extremely hard for me to fall asleep. Therefore I fell asleep during lectures and it became very difficult for me to concentrate on the course material. Moreover, I was distracted when reviewing and doing the assignment and quizzes due to the deficiency of sleeping. As a result, my quiz scores fell below 50 which drove my overall grade down. In the end, I talked with a teacher from the Faculty of Arts and Science who suggested me not to take the final exam since I was not prepared. I am still waiting for a mental health counsellor to help me.
I am appealing to drop STAT 263 (Fall, 2018) specifically because it is a mathematical course requiring massive calculations and logical analysis. It is more difficult for me compared to my other courses requiring more memorization and language skills. I did the worst in STAT 263 as well.
In next winter term, I will be enrolled in algebra course at the first-year level in order to get into STATS minor in second year. I will also try to get into HLTH major.
It will be fantastic if you can allow me to drop out from STATS 263 and not showing it on my transcript.
