Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean (Studies),

I am appealing to drop CISC 121 (Fall,2018). I unfortunately became very ill during the term of the semester and was bedridden for nearly a month and not being able to attend any of my classes during that time. I initially thought what I had was a temporary stomach flu or food poisoning so I filed a short-term extenuating circumstance application. When I realized that my illness was not a temporary stomach flu I immediately sought help from a doctor from the student wellness center as well as from Hotel Dieu urgent care. After recovering I filed an academic consideration due to extenuating circumstances and was granted my request. I then met with Professor Wendy and we discussed the option of either retaking the course or making my midterm as well other assignments percentage to be added onto my final exam which would be 67 of my mark which I agreed to accept. When I mentioned to Professor Wendy that I was taking this course in order to transfer into computing she suggested I retake it since the material I missed is essential for later courses I will have to take for this program and that the only way for me to study for this exam was to ask fellow students in the course for notes since the past exams were not the same and that most of the content is taught during the lecture. I felt very confident and overestimated my ability in being able to catch up and do the final exam. After I was healthy again and able to catch up on work I felt very overwhelmed with missed tests and assignments of my other three courses and was not able to catch up on the missed material from the other students. I had booked an appointment with an occupational therapist as well as an academic advisor and they both suggested that it was in my best interest to drop the course and retake it this following semester as my course load was too much for me to handle. Thank you for taking the time to consider my request.

Sincerely,
Aaliya
