Dear Associate Dean (Studies),
I am appealing to drop SOCY210 (Fall, 2018) and HLTH270 (Fall, 2018).
My request is due to mental health issues beyond my control that have affected my academic performance during my time at Queen¿¿s, which has led me to be unable to adequately perform in SOCY210 and HLTH270.
I have made strong efforts to work hard and succeed in these two courses, however, in the Fall semester I began to experience strong symptoms of mental health issues which I had difficulty acknowledging to myself. I began to feel extremely anxious about going to lectures, and it was difficult for me to complete basic tasks, leading me to struggle to complete coursework in a way that was far beyond my control. I was unable to manage a full course load in this state but did not know how to reach out for support, and thus these two courses suffered from this. Near the end of the semester, I reached out to Vicky Andrews, who encouraged me to book an appointment with one of the concurrent education counselors. I met with the personal counselor at Queen¿¿s, Martha Dougherty, and now plan to consult with her further in order to help support my academic goals.
I am currently in the process of creating personal adjustments in order to succeed in the following semesters. I have had an appointment with my doctor, Dr. Topp, in order to book an appointment with a therapist/medical professional that is able to help me further. I have also made a plan with Vicky Andrews which will allow me to gain the credits I would have received from SOCY210 and HLTH270.
Thank you for the time and effort took to read my appeal letter, and please contact me if there is any additional information needed regarding my extenuating circumstances.
Thank you,
Julia Thackray
