Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean of Studies Johanne Bénard,
I am writing to you to appeal to drop SOCY363 (Fall 2018). The fall 2018 term was difficult for me, due to multiple instances of illness including two kidney infections, as well as a concussion and dealing with post-concussion syndrome symptoms stemming from three previous concussion incidences, as well as dealing with celiac disease. Over the fall 2018 semester, I was unable to attend and complete coursework for heavily research-based courses especially SOCY363. This caused me to fall behind in all of my courses, however, this course, in particular, took a significant impact due to the fact that there was a heavy focus on in-class lectures, as well as participation. I attempted to catch up in all of my courses and was successful in doing so in all but this course. Mainly due to the fact that the deadlines were being piled on top of me resulting in a minimum of three large essays or assignments due every week for the past five weeks of the fall 2018 semester, which was difficult while still dealing with post-concussion syndrome symptoms.
Upon meeting with Academic Advisors as well as an occupational therapist within academic services and Queen¿¿s health services I made the decision that I wanted to attempt to complete this course over the winter break. When I met with my professor to discuss this possibility she informed me that even if I were to complete the course and do very well on all assignments I would most likely not finish the course with a good grade. Upon leaving for the winter break I once again fell ill with another kidney infection due to not taking care of myself properly throughout my tough final weeks, which is what lead to the lateness of this appeal.
Looking forward to the future, I have begun to look into attaining a specialist for my reoccurring kidney issues in Kingston which will allow me to deal with this illness in a timelier manner. I have also asked my family doctor to fill out the paperwork for academic support in regards to my post-concussion syndrome which will hopefully be completed soon in order to take effect this term and to help me in the fifth year that I will be taking next year as well. In regards to this term I have also realized that due to my reoccurring illnesses, classes with heavy participation in class might not always be the best option for me. Due to this, I have chosen to take more online courses knowing that I will be able to work at my pace within the set deadlines, as well as will be able to work from my house on days when my health is not at its best.
Thank you for your time and consideration,
Jessica Thompson
