Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,
I am appealing to drop SOCY 210 (Fall, 2018) as I have not been able to complete the coursework to pass the course.
The reason I need to appeal this course is I have been struggling with my mental health since my mom died about a year ago. My family situation has not been stable since then and is constantly affecting my mental health. It makes it difficult to find the motivation to do coursework as well as focusing and paying attention in lectures. I feel this has impacted my academic performance negatively by making it hard to complete assignments on time, participate in lectures and tutorials, and is straining my overall learning experience. As a result of this, I have not been able to complete the major social research assignment in this sociology course and therefore would be on track to fail the course. My mental health started deteriorating after the first month and a half of the semester. During the middle of the semester was when it was the worst and inhibited me from completing academic work, and focusing on any task completely. This is the same time as the assignment was due, therefore I could not complete it. My other courses were not affected to the degree of SOCY 210 because at that time they did not require completing major assignments; I was able to complete them by going to class for the most part. I have missed a few assignments and classes in all my courses but I am still able to complete my other courses at this point. About a week ago I started talking to people and started realizing how my mental health was affecting my academic performance and have started taking steps to try and work through this. I would not like this to get worse and continue through next semester, I would like to change. This is why I need to appeal, because I was not able to take action about my health when it was in the time frame to drop the course. Because that was when it was the worst and I could not do much overall, and was not aware of the problem to this degree. And now I'm afraid it will show up negatively on my transcript and affect my future academic career. I have looked for help and for a personal counselor, as the supporting documentation outlines, I met with a queens counselor to set up help for next semester. I hope to use support systems like counseling to help myself change my behaviour patterns and focus on academic performance to help my academic career. I am also planning on changing my program to find a subject that interests and inspires me more than sociology does at this time in my life. I met with an academic advisor that advised me to make this appeal as well as meet again to plan out my academic program for next semester. Along with regular meetings with a personal counselor, courses I feel interest me, and support from friends, I hope to improve my academic performance next year.
Thank you for your consideration,
Adrienne Mileski
