Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,
I am looking to appeal my grade on a final essay for a fourth year seminar course. The course is a Sociology course called, Sociology of Medicine (SOCY 429) with Professor Jordan Babando. I received a 67.5 on the final essay, making my final grade a B. I am looking to appeal this grade, in hopes of receiving a regrade or any opportunity to improve my grade on this assignment, as I feel that the grade does not accurately represent the work I submitted.
According to the assignment instructions, students were to write an essay about an area that the student is interested, in respect to the ways that sociology and medicine or healthcare interact in creating a social problem. The instructions states that there is no formal rubric, but that a successful paper would be; 15 pages double spaced, proper grammar, spelling and sentence sequence, proper citation with at least six sources, proper formatting, a topic related to the course and lastly, engages, is critical of and expands on content. I feel that my essay does all of these things, and that marks lost in other areas are not fair.
I am looking to appeal this grade as I am in my final year of my undergraduate studies, and I am applying to a Masters in Social Work. This is my lowest grade on my transcript for this semester, and so this grade is likely to prevent me from getting accepted into this competitive program.

This will eliminate possible ambiguities that I find in assignment instructions and rubrics, and allow myself to have a better understanding of what the professor is looking for in my work.
