Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: Dear Faculty of Arts and Sciences Dean of Student Affairs,

My name is Olivia Bauwens and I am a first-year student. I am requesting an appeal to drop my full-term Economics course (ECON110) due to extenuating circumstances. During November of the last term, I experienced significant family trauma due to the hospitalization of an immediate family member. I became mentally exhausted which caused my academics to suffer. This event lasted over two weeks, and negatively impacted my performance as a result. I got two of my exams deferred (PSYC100 and ECON110), and I was unable to perform to the best of my abilities. On top of having a full course load, this circumstance continues to put a lot of stress on me.

Currently, I am coping with this family issue by speaking to a personal counselor. Upon discussion with my counselor, we decided it would be in my best interest to drop ECON110 from my course load. By reducing my course load it would allow me to perform better academically and take control of my well-being. I do not need ECON110 in order to satisfy my degree plan. As well, my current grades in the course are not a reflection of who I am as a student. I would appreciate my circumstance being taken into consideration.
