Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Associate Dean (Arts and Sciences),

I am appealing to drop my marks from ENSC 103 (Fall, 2018). Preferably to NG or DR for the following reasons.

This past September I began my first year at Queens University. During this time I had a hard time adjusting to the many new things I was presented with, Including being away from home, keeping up with studies and managing my anxiety. My anxiety caused me to miss many classes resulting in me falling behind in my courses. Around half way through the semester, middle of November I stopped attending classes regularly as I felt the anxiety I was experiencing was too much to handle. I have spoken with my parents, doctor and therapist about this in much detail. It is something I have dealt with for a long time and I thought I would be able to balance the university lifestyle. I heavily considered writing my exams still to see if I could pass the courses but ultimately my condition lead me to feel it was not possible. I came home early before my exams started as I was nervous about sharing that with the people I knew at school. It was a tough time for me and I was not productive, with feelings of hopelessness and anxiety. I am on medication for my anxiety and when in Toronto I see a therapist frequently to discuss my feelings.

My academic plan going forward unfortunately does not involve Queens as I would like to attend a school closer to home in Toronto. I believe that living at home will allow me to manage my anxiety, focus on my mental health as I will be meeting my therapist regularly. This will also provide opportunity for me to function as a better student. My academic goal is to learn more about what I love, which is film. I want to be somewhere where creativity and learning are combined. Being creative has always helped with my anxiety and having that as an outlet is key for me.

I appreciate you taking the time to read this and am grateful for your understanding.

Sincerely,

Jesse Smith
