Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean (Studies),
My name is Jacob Richard, and I am a full-time student currently in my second year of studies at Queen¿¿s University. I am appealing to drop CLST-102 after the academic deadline.
On September 9th, 2018, I was in a motor vehicle accident that left me in critical condition. While I attempted to save my courses, I was forced to make many compromises. Luckily, at the time the professor for CLST-102 let me know that I would be able to complete the course online. He let me know of his intention of sending me lecture notes, recordings, and a deferred exam. Unfortunately, he failed to deliver on any of these promises, and never responded to any emails I sent him. Despite completing one of the three marked assignments, I never received a grade for said assignment. I also asked him for an alternative assignment for the one I could not complete, he failed to give me one. Despite promising a deferred exam, one was never scheduled. At the end of December, instead of receiving an email providing an apology or explanation, I received one detailing that I had been given an F for the class. As I¿¿m sure you can see, this is quite a complicated situation.
The timeline of events is as follows:
September 9th: I am involved in a debilitating car accident. I am told I have one un-displaced fracture in my foot.
September 11th: I email all my professors, asking them to provide academic accommodations for an 8-week recovery supported by Queen¿¿s Occupational Therapist Tess Grant.
September 15th: I am examined by an Orthopod who reveals findings that are huge deviations from what I was previously told. I did not have one un-displaced fracture but a much more extensive series of breaks in my foot. I am told I may never walk/run again.
September 18th: I email Professor Drew Griffith letting him know that the severity of the situation has changed drastically. Specifically, the increase of the 8-week recovery to an 8-month recovery.
September 19th: Professor Drew Griffith confirms that the course can be done remotely and promises to give both a deferred exam and tapes of the lectures. I email him back thanking him and asking for an opportunity to get the lecture tapes.
September 23rd: I receive a response, telling me that the lecture tapes will be delivered via OneDrive but that technical issues may result in me receiving older tapes rather than the most recent recordings.
October 1st: The professor still has not provided lecture notes or contacted me further. I send him an email asking about it. I am now in Thunder Bay waiting for surgery.
October 8th: The professor still hasn¿¿t contacted me. I send him another email, this time addressing the fact that we have an upcoming assignment. This assignment must be done in-class, so I ask for an alternative assignment to make up for it.
October 13th: I email the Assistant Dean of Studies Sue Blake detailing my situation, she reaches out to the professor.
October 18th: The Assistant Dean receives a response from the professor, explaining he is sorry for a lack of communication and plans on sending the lecture tapes this week.
This ends any further development. I never received any further contact from the professor. I went into surgery on the 30th of October and decided to just wait until December to ask about the deferred exam due to the lack of communication. To my surprise, I receive an F grade without any explanation before I could do so. I was unable to complete this course due to the professor¿¿s inaction. I was able to do another course online that was an accommodated campus course: HIST 241. This course has been handled perfectly and I took the deferred exam on the 12th of January. I was told that I would be able to re-take CLST 102 this winter term, but for logistical issues that is impossible. I plan on switching my major to a HIST-ARTH Medial so I can graduate on time. The failure of the professor to fulfill his promises is the reason I was given an F, and all my other courses that semester were successful. I am in weekly physical therapy to begin walking properly again and am going to relay updates on my condition to Tess Grant.
