14th, January 2019.
Dear Sir/Madam.
RE: Appeal to drop failed courses on my transcript.
I am appealing to drop GEOL 107 (Fall 2015) and GEOL 104 (Winter 2016) from my transcript. Over the past three years, I have worked so hard to better my GPA but its been difficult because of the failed courses I took in my first year of university. I am appealing now because am strongly considering applying for graduate school and my current GPA is not where l would like it to be.
At the beginning of 2015, my parents were going through a divorce which led to a family breakdown. Amidst the family breakdown, l got kicked out by my father and had to stay with friends for the last year of my high school. Getting accepted into Queen¿¿s University was the best thing that happened to me at that time. So, I thought moving to Kingston and having a fresh start at Queens would be a good idea. At the beginning of August 2015, I single handled moved from Toronto to Kingston excited about the school year and the new adventures ahead. However, adjusting to a new city and balancing school was very challenging because l did not have any family support. Since l was depending on OSAP and my summer savings, I decided to get a night job at Tim Hortons to keep me afloat. OSAP was fully aware of my family breakdown prior to joining Queens. I was working four nights a week which greatly affected my academics due to lack of balance between school and work. I was financially, emotionally and mentally stressed which took a toll on my academics. After failing some of my fall 2015 courses I was not academically advised on how to improve my grades or the consequences of failing a course, so l pushed through the winter semester (2016) hoping to do better, instead, it got worse. Hence, l was put on academic probation and had to seek help. In the spring of 2016, I talked to an academic advisor who recommended taking summer courses to improve my grades and GPA. I also talked to a health-care professional who counselled me through my depression state. Over the last two years, I have done summer courses to improve my GPA and get better at balancing my academics and work.
I strongly believe having these two courses on my transcript is the reason why my GPA has not been making a lot of progress. Am appealing now because while talking to an academic advisor about graduate school and my GPA, I was advised that appealing would be the best option for my situation since am in my final semester. Having these courses dropped off my transcript will greatly improve my GPA and give me a better shot at getting into graduate school.
Thank you for your consideration.
Yours Sincerely,

Rachael Akankwasa
