Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean of Biology,
I am appealing to drop BIOL 300 (Fall 2018). I did not drop BIOL 300 before the drop date due to the fact that I was unaware of the extent that my health would decline within the time period of the course. I am only appealing to drop BIOL 300 because my illness significantly affected my attendance and participation more than anything else. Unfortunately, the weighting for participation and attendance in BIOL 300 makes up 50 of the students final grade. My other courses had lower weighting of participation and therefore did not affect my performance in those courses as much.
Late September to the beginning of October, I began to feel the symptoms of an endometriosis flare up. I was diagnosed with endometriosis when I was 13, and it is incurable. It is normally subdued by various treatments I am on to stop the progression of the disease; every once and a while the disease has random flare ups. Some symptoms of these flare ups include intense nausea, random vomiting, appetite loss, dizziness, random fainting, digestive issues, anxiety, and debilitating pain. When this flare up began, I was unaware of how bad it was going to be since the severity can change each flare up. At the beginning of the flare up I was able to attend some classes but was fatigued easily and had to often retire for the day early. By mid-October (October 15th) I had such serious symptoms I was unable to attend lectures. I still completed and submitted course work from home throughout this time. My flare up affected me until the middle of December when I was able to return home to Boston, MA for further testing and treatment. My health at this time declined very seriously, to the point where I was hospitalized multiple times. I had to defer my 2 final exams and get an extension on a take-home essay in order to return home for more intense testing and treatment. Dr. Paul Martin would not create any way for me to make up any of these lost participation marks, and therefore I failed the course. Me failing was not due to my lack of doing work, but due to my inability to attend lectures due to my declining health.
After returning home on December 12th, I was able to receive medical care over the break as well as undergo procedures and get better treatment than I was getting in Kingston. I have since been able to make-up my 2 deferred exams and my take home essay from my other courses. I am appealing to drop BIOL 300 (Fall 2018) so I am not academically punished for my sudden illness. I plan on taking the course again in Fall 2019 because I do not expect another flare up to occur in the next few years due to my new treatment plan.
