Petition Letter: To: Associate Dean of Arts and Sciences

REQUEST:
I am appealing for credit standing in the course, OCEANOGRAPHY, GEOLOGY 200 (FALL 2018).

EXTENUATING CIRCUMSTANCES:¿¿
At the end of last semester, I was diagnosed with a chronic, devastating diagnosis, two days before my last exam. In addition to the extreme physical pain, I was emotionally and mentally traumatized by the diagnosis. I was unable to sleep for the two nights prior to my last exam, due to the physical pain and the emotional distress. I wrote my last exam which consisted of fifteen questions. Upon leaving the exam room, I was approached by another student who had commented that she was lucky we only had to answer ten of the fifteen questions. I realized in my distress and distraction, I had misread the instructions, and had answered all fifteen. I went home immediately and emailed my professor, within the hour, explaining I had been sick when I wrote the exam, and asking him if he could please mark the ten questions I had listed in the email. I remembered which ones I had done the best on and the last five questions of the fifteen had been my strongest answers. He had emailed back and said that while he sympathized with me for being sick, he would have to check with his committee, in order to be fair to other students. After doing so, I received another email saying that unfortunately, they could only mark the first ten questions on the page. My mark prior to the exam had been a B. I had studied extensively until I became very sick. My final mark, after the exam, came in at a C-. Please consider my appeal for CREDIT STANDING in this course.

FUTURE PLAN:
As for a future plan, I am currently in the process of seeing specialists and getting further testing done, for my health condition, and am just about to begin treatments. My doctor has also filled in the paperwork necessary for Accessibility Services and is in the process/ or has already mailed it in so that accommodations may be made for future courses, tests and exams, as the need arises.

Thank you.
